Marine parks under siege
In coming weeks, the NSW parliament will consider a Shooters Party Bill for a five-year moratorium on the creation of new marine parks and sanctuary zones within existing marine parks needed to safeguard our oceans for the future.
The NSW government has given its 'in principle' support to this appalling legislation to stop any new marine parks in NSW. It would put a freeze on the vital protection provided by marine sanctuaries for our turtles, dolphins, seahorses and hundreds of other marine plants and animals.
This move goes against the overwhelming scientific and community support for marine parks. These multiple use areas balance fishing in the majority of the park with a series of protected sanctuaries where marine life can breed, mature and grow.

I strongly disagree with the proposed moratorium on new marine parks and sanctuaries in NSW.
Overwhelming scientific evidence shows marine parks and their sanctuary zones provide vital protection for aquatic habitats and marine life, including rare and threatened species. They can increase the number, size and breeding potential of fish populations, build resilience into ecosystems so they can cope with human impacts such as climate change, and contribute financial and tourism benefits to local communities.
A five-year moratorium on new marine parks in NSW is out of step with public support for these areas and goes against the advice of scientists around the world. It would put NSW firmly at odds with the growing national and global recognition of the value of marine parks.
I call on the NSW Labor to reverse its in-principle support for the Marine Parks Amendment (Moratorium) Bill and ensure it is defeated when it comes before parliament.
